Holly Carpentier, owner of New Direction K9

My training journey began nearly 20 years ago when I adopted a senior, dog-aggressive Akita mix. The behavior interventions I learned began my interest in training and stood me good stead when some years I later adopted my first Belgian Malinois.

While competing in obedience, rally, and protection (Mondio) with my own dogs, I founded and served as head trainer for the 501c(3) dog training and sport group, Shasta Dogs in Redding, CA. Events included lure coursing, Haystack Hunt, sheep-herding, agility, scentwork, pack walks, advanced obedience, rattlesnake aversion, and trials for AKC Farm Dog, CGC, and Trick Dog. Numerous teachers and mentors in the thriving Nor Cal and Bay Area dog training community shaped my training style.

Meanwhile, I was asked to serve as team trainer to Shasta County K9 Search & Rescue. I certified in HRD with my own dog and assisted in training the team's diverse SAR dogs. I also enjoyed fostering an array of high-energy and high-drive dogs, particularly for the west coast Belgian Malinois rescue Woof Project. I still find room for a few fosters a year, partnering with rescues such as WAAG and START

In 2018, Haven Humane Society, the largest shelter in Shasta County, invited me to fill the role of staff Behavior Specialist. This involved getting to know new dogs each day, identifying their strengths and working on behavior issues over their stay. Bully breeds made up a large part of the shelter population.

I moved to Lewis County WA in 2021 and began to focus on one-on-one coaching and board-and-trains, with client base from Portland/Vancouver to the Seattle area. My mode of training typically uses lots of edible rewards, but since every dog is different, I don't limit myself to that. I work with a lot of reactive dogs and enjoy the big difference in quality of life for both dog and owner that comes with learning impulse control and appropriate manners. I'm experienced in the use of ecollars for off-leash security and extinguishing persistent behaviors. I enjoy off-leash hiking with my regular boarding and day-training guests!

My other interests include gardening, raising heritage Silver Fox rabbits and Sebastapol geese, performing and teaching cello and piano, and mushrooming (always with at least one dog!).
